Eliza nervously awaits her first lesson with Higgins. Uncomfortable, with a proficient Stomach and wearing new clothes, her nerves are not eased by Higgins pacing around the room. Thankfully, Pickering is also at that place with his calming presence.
Higgins. (Looking down at Eliza) Are you able to reprize the alphabet?
Eliza. (Surprised) I am not illiterate. I let the cat out of the bag different than you; But, I do know my alphabet.
Higgins. (Hateful laughter) Differently, you say? It is more than like a effly different language.
Eliza. (Standing) I concur to let you transform me into a lady. I did not suit to be disrespected, or for you to make fun of me.
Pickering. (Pleasantly) Miss Doolittle, I am sure the Professor meant no harm. Just let him teach you his way. After all, he is the expert.
Higgins (Rudely) Eliza, do not motion my methods again or I will lock you in your room until you throw learned not to question me!
Eliza (On the boundary of tears) I would rather continue to speak like a common street peddler than to put up with your nationalistic attitude.
(Higgins and Pickering look at each other in complete disbelief as Eliza walks out the door.)
The scene I picked had elements that I thought were signs of Higgins trying to show his dominance. When I read this scene, I felt as if Higgins was disrespectful and overly rude to Eliza. It wasnt necessary to be so mean to her. Higgins also jeopardize to drag Eliza around the room by her hair, which I rig to be an extreme reaction. I wanted to show Eliza to have more strength and will power to not contract Higgins talking to her like she wasnt worthy like he did.
