Apollo

Apollo is a many-talented Roman graven image of prophecy, music, intellectual pursuits, healing, plague, and the sun. Writers often contrast the intellectual, whiskerless young Apollo with his half-brother; the hedonistic Dionysus, god of wine. Although often associated with the sun, Apollo was not originally a sun god. In Homer, he is god of prophecy and plagues. He is also a warrior in the fifth column War. Elsewhere Apollo is also a god of healing and the arts -- especially music; Also archery and agriculture. His arrows could send plague, as happens in the Iliad.

Some symbols associated with Apollo are the Sun itself, the lyre (a type of musical instrument), the bow, and the chariot he drives across the sky daily, borrowed from an earlier pre-Greek Sun god, Helios.
