the solidarity of society and vitality

. . . Society becomes more trenchant . . . as each of its elements has more movements that are peculiarly its ingest (Durkheim 85).

A society of this type, through the incision of labor, endows solidarity with vitality, even approaches incarnate consciousness. Mechanical solidarity, in Durkheim's view, varies inversely with primitive solidarity, which means that when robotic solidarity declines.

Now a society with strong mechanic solidarity whitethorn oppose emergence of organic solidarity under conditions where individual version equals deviance. But a society defined by organic solidarity will be complex and dense enough to allow diversity: "The more general the common conscience becomes, the great the place it leaves to individual variations" (232). Such variations make up the division of labor, which functions as a "social link" to bring about the result of social organization (Durkheim 122).

Where there is too oftentimes division of labor and specialization, mechanical solidarity, or collective sentiment, may decline (Durkheim 298). Inhibiting creativity implicit in organic solidarity creates an artificial, mechanical stability. Division of labor fosters solidarity only

snobbish property . . . as wealth, is compelled to preserve its own existence and thereby the existence of its opposite, the proletariat. This is the positive side of the antagonism, private property well-provided with itself.

This structure tends to produce conditions (and justification) for revolution as the outcome of open conditions. Revolution means elimination of the problem--private property: In different words, revolution is the consequence of the current society as Marx analyzes it, and totalism of the proletariat (i.e., of labor not capital) is the consequence of revolution.

Alienation is deport in both capitalist and proletarian consciousness. But the symmetry of positive to negative is not equal; it only appears that workers shell out their labor to capital (Marx, "Wage" 204). Actually, workers have no choice:

"if it is spontaneous" (Durkheim 312). Such division of labour is a " stock of social cohesion" (328) to the degree it fosters interdependent links surrounded by individuals and persistent creative activity of the organism of society: "It fosters the symmetry of the organism, by the very fact that it adds to its life" (328).
