What is the Apocalypse Now?

99). In Shanidar cave in the foothills of the Zagros mountains in Iraq, a skeleton of a Neanderthal firearm who had lost one arm was found, indicating that Neanderthals knew how to take care of the sick of(p) and injured (Bar-Yosef, 1993, p. 97). Evidence from the Levant suggests that late man existed thither as long as 200,000 to 250,000 years ago, but Neanderthals simply date back 150,000 years. Bar-Yosef suggests that the Neanderthals may overhear migrated from Europe to the proficient East, where modern man was already living. He postulates that sudden low temperature snaps which occurred mingled with 115,000 and 65,000 years ago might have generate this migration (Bar-Yosef, 1993, p. 99).

Bar-Yosef points to signs of deliberate burials at Qafzeh, Skhul, Amud and Kebara, perforated marine shells found in Skhul and Qafzeh, and red ochre used in those two caves and in Hayonim cave as attesting to symbolic behavior among Neanderthals (Bar-Yosef, 1993, p. 100).

Neanderthals and modern piece died in the Middle East near Mount Carmel or so the same time, yet the Neanderthals died out and the modern humans survived. In Europe, too, as evidenced by findings in France, Neanderthals and Cro-Magnon man live at the same time, and may have engaged in trade (Begley, 1996, p. 61). A theory has been put forward as to why the Neanderthals

It appears from the evidence cited above that Neanderthals appeared later than modern man, and may have been a divergent species. Although both species seemed to have developed similar skills in terms of making tools and ornaments, utilise fire, and performing burials, there is little evidence of interbreeding between the two groups. If this had been common practice, it would be expected that many liaise type skeletal remains would be found at the places where they coexisted. Characteristics of the Neanderthals such as a low birth rate, premature age of death, and less efficient hunting and food encyclopedism methods, may have led to their extinction.
