Caravaggio often miscellaneous the Greek and Roman gods. (Bacchus/ artificeble.com) This painting is of Bacchus, the Roman god of drink and drunken revelry. Caravaggios Roman god is a teenaged son with a carafe of wine and a wicket of rotting fruit. The son is retention a goblet with most of the same wine, as though he is offering it to the viewer. The take is partially undressed with his garment stripped from one situation of his body. His hand is on his belt as if he is somewhat to completely un-dress.
Caravaggio was the master of chiaroscuro; the art of using light and isolated in paintings. In this work of Bacchus, the background over the boys right shoulder is very dark, almost black. whence there is a light appearing from the boys left stance shining directly onto Bacchus, the bed and the stone table in front of him. This light all the way illuminates the young gods face, partially clad body, the wine and the fruit.
