The Drovers Wife, written by Henry Lawson, is a short story about a drovers wife who lives in the outback with her children. In this short story Henry depicts umteen images of the Australian scrubbing and its people. Many of these images have formed the basis of our view of what is meant by the term Australia and Australian.

The Drover and The Drovers Wife are classic Australian icons because there are many drovers and their wives who live in the outback similarly like the ones in the story. First of all a drover is a character of person who drives a herd of kine, such as oxen and sheep, very considerable distances, usually to be sold. This means the Drover is aside from his wife, and possibly also away from his children as well, for require periods during the year. This absence of The Drover is shown in the short story in the following quote, Besides, she has not heard from her husband for six months and is hot about him. The effect of this absence is shown in the final quad words of the previous quote.
The Drovers Wife feels uneasy because she has not communicated with her husband in any way for so long and does not know if anything harmful has happened to him or the cattle or not. This feeling of concernment naturally occurs in all humans beings.
Despite the Drover is away from his family, his lonely wife becomes a stronger person emotionally. She is accustomed to being left alone with the children for long periods because it is not the first time that the drover has gone away to drove. The Drovers Wife endures many hardships whilst living in the bush, which itself is also a hardship.
