Dear editor,
I have been studying in Peninsular Malaysia for 2 semesters. Recently, some hotshot asked me if I am a Chinese. I said no because I am non. I am Iban from Sarawak. We originally have fair skin cargon Chinese, yes. That question maybe was rather a compliment to me. only when it had brought me to this thought - what is it about us Malaysians and our obsession of dividing ourselves to categories; in this context, to hotfoots? Malay, Indian, Chinese, Iban, Kadazandusun and the list goes on and on and on. I am fair and you ar dark. I have round eyes and yours are slanting. What is it really about?
We cannot blame our citizen for this matter, really. Colonialist left us in separate community based on our races. Malay used to be given as farmer, Chinese as miner, Indian as no-account tapper. On our way to lift the dignity of our own race, it makes us, perhaps, work so ignorant toward other races beside our own. While, supposedly every race in this coarse should complement each other. I moot that this is the value that had brought our country to where it stands right now; the togetherness. That value is the 1 that helped us to achieve our nation independence. We are known as a well-united multiracial country and we shall never forget that.




Malays fertilize using their hand, Chinese immerse using chopsticks, Indians eat on banana leaf but the similarity is that we all eat rice. What am I trying to say is that, we might not share the same language, belief and tradition but we are in one country, we do share the same values. By saying I am Malaysian, I am not to asking all of us to forget our resolve and descent but to make our nation as one and walk alongside each other as one. We do not have to bleach out our identity to run others but to embrace it and respect our country biodiversity. I am firstly a Malaysian. Then, I am Iban. My opinion as a pair of very young eyes to this country might not matter that much.
