The use of the knife early on in the story foreshadows the later plot development of the Gimp and Justo conflict to the death with knives. However, another use of foreshadowing is seen when we are told close to how the fight between the Gimp and Justo started. During a heated rally similar to mad dogs, a priest pulls them apart and says "Quiet, you animals" (Llosa 404). The fight resembles two animals without emotions. So, too, do the two groups of men.
