J. clams Cole World: The Sideline Story

J. Cole the signifier of rapper who worries aloud, and frequently, if hes getting too deep for his own songs. A St. Johns University magna cum laude graduate raised in poverty by a wizard mother, Cole distinguished himself in his archean cargoner as much through effort as talent. Over a string of fiercely earnest, frequently eye-popping mixtapes, he raps in a way which the semicolons and embedded clauses are audible, and he produced all his own tracks. You feel as if you were ceremony a movie when J.Cole tells his stories. He has become a pencil lead light of the conscious-rap crowd. The responseing major-label debut, Cole World: The Sideline Story, which was released in modern September has shaped up to be an actual oversize Moment for Cole. Cole will get at least a partial spot in the spotlight. But Cole is committed to it, and he fleshes it out with surprising musical detail-- accompaniment vocals, comping jazz guitars, lots and lots of grand piano. The songs that stick to this template feel warm, pleasant, and Cole-ish. The rest of Cole World is a 2011-era pop-rap project with a varying success rate: the madcap, syncopated single Cant Get Enough feels like a lost transmission system from 2002-era rap radio. It doesnt help that Cole brings the least-flavorful bars of his career to his debut, aiming, closely likely, for something more universal than his diaristic mixtapes. Besides this, he seems to be playacting by implied, major-label debut rules: keep it simple, slow it down, dont lose anyone.
