By understanding these relationships we can maximise our potentials in life, family, work and play, therefore receiving more than enjoyment from every daylight living. Diener, Emmons, Larson and Griffin (1985) define quality of life as a measure of how satisfied someone is with their life deliberate against the chosen persons own criteria. Quality of life needs to be measured this way as generic questions can place more or less weight on characteristics that may not hold equal value to all individuals. For example coin may be desired by some, whilst others may outpouring more value to quality time spent with family.
Lack of sleep is excessively known to affect cognitive functioning in various ways. Cognitive function is defined as the brains processes of thinking and memory (Burton, Weston and Kowalski, 2009).



Recent medical studies have prove through medical imaging of the brain that some pre-frontal cortex areas are hypo-activated when performing executive functioning tasks during the daytime afterwards the subjects were sleep deprived, supporting evidence that cognition may be negatively affected (Sugarman, Stern and Walsh, 1985 as cited in Shekleton, Rogers and Rajaratnam, 2010). It has also been found that there can be reduced filiation flow and metabolic rate to the thalamus and pre-frontal and parietal cortices, all measurable areas of the brain in cognition, memory and thinking (Thomas, Sing, Belenky et al., 2009 as cited in Kim, Kim, Park, Choi and Lee, 2011).
